Webcast will advise college seniors, young workers on saving for retirement

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor will host a webcast for college seniors and young workers on paying down student loans, determining a budget, managing credit and saving for retirement. “Take Charge of Your Financial Future” will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EST on Friday, Feb. 28.

The webcast will be hosted by the department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration in coordination with the U.S. Department of Education and the NAACP Financial Freedom Center as part of America Saves Week 2014.

“As young people wrap up their education and prepare to move ahead in their careers, this can be an exciting and challenging time,” said Phyllis C. Borzi, assistant secretary of labor for employee benefits security. “There are common-sense steps young workers can take to maximize their savings and take charge of their financial future.”

“In this economy, it is more important than ever to connect college students and young professionals to economic education and resources,” says Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, senior director of the NAACP Economic Department. “We look forward to using this webinar to highlight partners and best practices to advance economic empowerment in very tangible and meaningful ways.”

Topics being covered during the webcast include:

  • Department of Labor representatives presenting information and tools on budgeting, saving for short- and long-term goals, and making the most of employer-provided retirement benefits;
  • Department of Education representatives discussing options for student loan borrowing and repayment; and
  • NAACP Financial Freedom Center representatives speaking on managing debt and credit, and building savings.
